

William Charles Johnston, a Vietnam War veteran, longtime employee of Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals, and a familiar presence among friends, died peacefully on Thursday, March 5. He was 75. A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Mr. Johnston graduated from Bayless High School in 1970. That same year, he enlisted in the United States Army and served as a Military Police officer. During his service, he was deployed to Vietnam, where he carried out his duties with dedication and honor.
After returning home, Mr. Johnston began his career with the St. Louis Water Company before spending several years at Monsanto Chemical. He later joined Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals, where he worked for many years until his retirement. Outside of work, he became an active member of the Elks organization, where his regular presence at bingo nights earned him the affectionate nickname “Bingo Bill.” Among friends and family, he was equally known for his easygoing nature, his interest in the day’s weather, and his enjoyment of a good meal at his favorite local restaurants. He was a beloved companion to the numerous family pets throughout the years.
Mr. Johnston was predeceased by his parents, William and Naomi Johnston. He is survived by his brothers, Michael Johnston and his wife, Mary, and Donald Johnston and his wife, Vicki. He was a devoted uncle and proud Godfather to Michael and Mary’s daughters, Elizabeth McGuire (née Johnston) and Megan Johnston. Great Uncle to Mrs. McGuire and her husband, Aiden McGuire’s three children: Evelyn, John, and Natalie.
Those who knew Mr. Johnston remember a man who brought humor, warmth, and companionship to everyday moments. He will be deeply missed by his family, his many friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday, March 23, at Kriegshauser Mortuary – West Chapel. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 24, at Our Lady of the Pillar Catholic Church, 401 S. Lindbergh Blvd., St. Louis, Missouri. Interment will take place at Resurrection Cemetery.
