Dorothy is survived by her loving daughters, Suzanne (Brendan) Heneghan and Beverly (Gerry) Evans, and six adoring grandchildren, Peter, Christopher, James, Mary, Sean and Gregory. She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Charles Ehinger, and her brother, Jerome Kender.
Dorothy attended Misericordia University in Pennsylvania on a full academic scholarship, where she received an undergraduate degree in Chemistry. She began her career working in Schering-Plough, where she was one of the first women chemists hired to work in their lab. Never one to leave good enough alone, she then returned to school to earn her Masters in Education at Seton Hall in order to begin teaching. After earning her Masters she decided to head to Germany, where she took a job teaching the children of American Army officers stationed there.
It was after she returned home that she married the love of her life, Charles. They were married from 1962 to his death in 2001. They raised their two daughters (as well as their dog Missy) in Upper Saddle River, New Jersey.
She had a lifelong passion for the arts that began when she would play the organ as a young girl in church, and she continued to be an avid painter throughout her life. She loved sports – including many years playing golf and tennis at the Tuxedo Club in New York. She continued to enjoy reading, playing bridge and watching sports (especially when her grandchildren were playing) for her entire life.
While she was a woman of many interests, her family was what she cared about most. From phone calls to visits to birthday cards, it was clear to anyone that knew her that her family was always the number one thing on her mind.
Above all, she was a woman of steadfast faith – her rosary beads were never far away and she was more likely to attend two masses on Sunday than to miss.
