Hugh J. Dyer, Jr., known as Huey, was born in Cincinnati in 1943 to Hugh Dyer and Regina Nelson. He was the older brother of Tom. After his parents divorced, Huey was raised by his mother in Cincinnati and spent summers in Florida with his father. He learned independence early and often said he grew up in a pool hall, where his lifelong love of pool began. As a boy, he also caddied at a local country club, beginning a love of golf that stayed with him throughout his life.
After graduating high school, Huey enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Munich, Germany. While overseas, he competed in the 1964 USAREUR Pockets Billiard Tournament in Heidelberg and was a finalist. After returning home, he worked at his father’s bar, married, and became the father of a son, Hugh J. Dyer III. Knowing factory work was not for him, Huey moved to Las Vegas, where he began dealing blackjack at the Four Queens and worked his way up to pit boss. It was there that he met Kathy, the woman he would spend the next forty years of his life with.
After they married, Huey and Kathy lived in Bellingham, Washington, and later returned to Cincinnati so Huey could be near his mother, where he helped open one of the first riverboat casinos on the Ohio River. Being back in Cincinnati was especially meaningful when his granddaughter, Victoria, was born. Huey retired in 2005 and enjoyed working around the house, golfing, and spending time with his family, especially his beloved Tori. After Kathy retired, they moved to Florida and eventually settled in Isla Key, where Huey loved his home overlooking Boca Ciega Bay, the friendships he made, and the life he shared with the woman he loved.
