Spencer was the youngest fire captain ever promoted by the Charlotte Fire Department. He served the department for 28 years. During his years in Charlotte, NC, he was also a sought after photographer.
Upon retirement, Spencer and his wife, Alice, returned to St. Pete where they lived many years in his child at home on Pass-a-Grille Beach. Here, his compassion for photography continued to flourish. He was very active in St Pete City Theater and served as president of the Friends of the Gulf Beaches History Museum until his resignation this past January.
He is survived by his loving wife of almost 49 years, Alice; his son, Commander John S. Lucas IV, USN (Tonya); son, Gunnery Sergeant Samuel G. Lucas, retired USMC (Shannon); daughter, Laura Lucas Sullivan (John); and grandchildren, Madison, Nathan, John S. Lucas V “Luke”, Riley, Jordan, Lane, and Zachary.
Spencer was a generous and kind soul, always ready with a joke to make you smile. He gladly gave his time and help whenever it was needed. All who knew him were blessed by his unending positivity and his unshakable love for serving Jesus. One day, we will meet him again in heaven until that precious time, we know he is now filled with peace and joy which will never end.
A memorial service will be held 3pm Tuesday, December 29, 2020, at Church by the Sea, 495 137th Ave Cir, St. Petersburg, FL 33708. The family asks guests in attendance represent Spencer’s favorite color by wearing something purple.
