

DR. CARLOS H. MONSANTO, PhD, Phi Beta Kappa, Assoc. Prof. UH, Honorary Consul of Guatemala. Born, Guatemala City 4/16/1935. Youngest child of Dr. Adolfo M. Monsanto & Rosa Dardon. Brother to Carmen, Enio & Jose. Married Bonnie Pickett 1957, 3 children: Arturo 1969-1989, Elena 1962-2010 & Daniel. 4 grandchildren. 2 great granddaughters. Studied & taught at Univ. of Iowa & Univ. of Calif.-Berkeley. Also taught at SUNY-Binghamton, SHSU, Univ. of St. Thomas & HCC. His specialties were Spanish, Latin-American literature, culture & civilization. He hosted travel & study programs in Mexico, Costa Rica, Spain & Guatemala. He lectured at the Sorbonne, Oxford & the Circulo Medina in Madrid. Music was his favorite & he loved sharing his talents, he had a fine voice & a gift for interpreting Latin-American standards. Severely handicapped by poor eyesight, he never let it prevent him from reaching his goals & never let it keep him from helping others. He helped sponsor medical & construction projects in Guatemalan villages. After his son, Arturo’s death, he organized & presented a Latin-American folk festival at UH to raise money for the scholarship now known as The Monsanto Family Scholarship. Memorial Service: Jan 21, Saturday, A.D.Bruce Chapel, 10 am, entrance 13 off Cullen; reception to follow.
