Palmer “Wilson” Daniel was born on December 14, 1946 in San Nicolas on the island of Aruba. He was the third child of the late Power and Madonna Daniel. He lived in Aruba until he was 8 years old, and then his family moved to Grenada. In Grenada, he attended Belair Elementary School and Grenada Boys’ Secondary School.
Wilson immigrated to Montreal, Canada in November 1968 and worked in a mattress factory. In summer 1969, he had an accident at the factory that resulted in the loss of fingers. This accident didn’t deter him from learning to bake bread and pursuing crafts such as weaving antimacassars. He also continued his education at Dawson College and Sir George Williams University, where he received a degree in Social Science with a concentration in Economics.
While visiting New Jersey in spring 1975, he met his wife-to-be, Anne Marie Correne Edwards. They were married on September 3, 1977 and moved to Montreal. Because one Montreal winter was one too many for Anne Marie, they moved to Houston, Texas in 1978. In 1979, Palmer began working for Kocide (which was later bought by DuPont), the company that he would retire from almost 35 years later in 2014.
Wilson and Anne Marie moved to Missouri City, Texas. They had a son, Jelani Christopher Daniel and a daughter, Tamica Hasina Daniel. In May 1989, Wilson moved with his family to Sugar Land, Texas, where he would reside for the rest of his life.
Wilson was outspoken, loyal, and loved to laugh. His outspoken nature sometimes got him into trouble, such as when he became a whistleblower at his job to address safety concerns. His outspokenness was balanced by his loyalty and humor. He was dedicated to his church, St. Laurence Catholic Church in Sugar Land, Texas. He volunteered as an usher, often assisting at multiple masses a week. He also went on a medical mission to Laredo, Texas with the church. He supported his wife and children in their pursuit of degrees, drove to different states for rock-hunting trips, and attended prayer meetings, band, choir and orchestra concerts, speech team banquets, and intramural basketball games. His loyalty also meant that he was an avid Houston sports fan who cheered hard (sometimes making his voice hoarse) at countless Rockets, Texans, Oilers, and Astros games. He reveled in challenging die-hard New York sports fans, and bragging about any Houston sports team, even when they weren’t performing very well. These discussions would often spark smiles and laughter that could be seen and heard from afar.
He loved to give gifts, grow plants and vegetables, barbeque and travel. Wilson gave gifts for special occasions or simply when he saw a pair of shoes he thought someone would like. He transformed his Texas backyard into a Caribbean garden and prided himself on his barbequing skills. When he retired, his company gave him a globe and told him to travel the world. Through pilgrimages and cruises, he did just that.
