Cynthia Aileen “Cyndi ” Conyers, lovingly known to many in her younger years as “Winki,” passed away on May 12, 2026, in Charlottesville, Virginia, at the age of 71, surrounded by the love of her family.
Cyndi was born on February 2, 1955, in Corpus Christi, Texas, to Billy and Corrine Slater. Cyndi never met a stranger. She had a heart made for loving others and spent her life caring for everyone around her. Family was always at the center of her world, and she devoted herself completely to the people she loved.
Cyndi found joy in life’s simple moments — searching for shark teeth at the beach, spending time at the casino, baking with her sister, cooking home-cooked meals for family and friends, and making memories with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. In her younger years, she worked as a waitress, but her greatest role and proudest accomplishment was being a homemaker, mother, grandmother, and caregiver to those she loved.
One of the memories her family will cherish forever was the way she would wake up her children and grandchildren singing, “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah, Zip-a-Dee-Ay, my oh my, we’re gonna have a wonderful day,” while opening the blinds to start the morning. Her warmth, laughter, and unconditional love made everyone around her feel safe, welcomed, and cared for.
She is survived by her fiancé, Chris Hedrick; her children, Chris Conyers (Arica) and Kelli Zitzelberger (Joey); and the grandchildren who meant the world to her: Brenden Conyers (Sam), Ryan Newhouse (Brenna), Colby Conyers, Hannah Zitzelberger, Kaylin Zitzelberger, Chloe Conyers, and Joshua Conyers.
She also leaves behind her beloved great-grandson, Carson Conyers; her great- granddaughters, Shay and Ava; her sisters, Billie DeWoody (Gene) and Teri Wheeley (Ronnie); and her brother, Kenny Slater (Rita).
Cyndi loved her nephews and nieces as if they were her own children: Joe King (Kristie), Troy Wheeley (Jennifer), Jason Wheeley (Jennifer), Jessica Burton (Thomas), Brittany Slater, and Kelly Smith, along with many extended family members, and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Billy and Corrine Slater; her brother, Mike Slater; and her sister-in-law, Ava Slater.
Cyndi also leaves behind her beloved cats, Sassy and Sheba, who brought her so much comfort and companionship.
A Celebration of Life will be held on May 30, 2026, at 3:00 PM at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Home, 186 Shelton Shop Road, Stafford, Virginia 22554.
A private family burial at McFadden Family Graveyard will take place at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association or a charity of your choosing in Cyndi’s memory.
Cyndi’s love, kindness, and unwavering devotion to her family will continue to live on in everyone fortunate enough to know her. She will be deeply missed and forever loved.
