

Parents Grady H. Howell and Lucy A. Howell – born in Kimball, WV. He was born on November 7, 1936, and went home to be with the Lord on July 31, 2023. He married on Sept 3, 1960, to Eleanor S Howell – Survived by two children, James O. Howell, Jr. married to April M. Howell & Odette K. Holmes married to Todd F. Holmes. He was proud of his three grandsons Cameron A. Holmes, James O. Howell III (Mary O. Howell) and Alexander S Howell and three great-grandchildren and (1) Nephew and (3) Nieces.
Jim served in the U.S. Army for four years and was stationed in Korea, Okinawa and Arlington, Virginia. After his career in the Army, he was employed for a brief period with Western Electric and then served a 26-year career at Fort Belvoir for the Department of Defense. He was the Deputy Dean for the Defense System Management College for many years. He was honored to have the “Howell Auditorium” named after him in recognition of his constant dedication, his hours of devotion and years of service.
After retiring in early 1992, Jim relocated to South Carolina and started living – the “good life” of fishing, going to Nascar races, traveling, and spending quality time with his family. In 1996, he and Eleanor decided to move to Lake Gaston, NC. They loved living on the lake, where he could drop down the lift and pull out his fishing boat and just go. After years of lake living, they built a home in Roanoke Rapids where he continued volunteering at the hospital, serving the community through the Lions Club and was President of the Striper Club. In Spring of 2019, they relocated to be closer to their family in Louisa, Virginia.
Services will be at First Christian Church in Keswick, VA on Monday, August 7 at 11:00 a.m. A viewing will take place on Tuesday, August 8, at 10:00 – 10:45 a.m. and then laid to rest at Stafford Memorial Park on Shelton Shop Road, North Stafford on Tuesday, August 8th at 11:00 a.m.
