JD began his career proudly serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force, where he developed the discipline and sense of duty that he carried with him throughout his life. After his military service, he devoted two decades to teaching history, retiring from Pampa Independent School District in Pampa, Texas. His love for history and teaching shaped countless young lives and reflected his deep respect for the past and its lessons.
In retirement, JD continued to give of himself, serving as a standardized patient educator at East Tennessee State University. He found great joy in helping medical students learn not just clinical skills, but the importance of compassion and respect when caring for patients.
A lifelong fan of the Edmonton Oilers, JD never lost faith that “this season” would be the season. His passion for the team was a constant reminder of his optimism and loyalty, qualities that also defined how he loved his family.
JD shared more than 25 years of marriage with Jacklyn McNeil, and the two remained lifelong friends. He was a devoted father to Shane McNeil of Virginia and Amber Batteiger of North Dakota. His greatest pride, however, was his role as a grandfather. JD’s four grandchildren — Mackenzie McNeil, and Dallas, Asher, and Brynlee Batteiger — were the heart of his world.
Each grandchild held a special place in his life:
With Dallas, JD was a constant buddy, sharing laughs and popsicles side by side.
With Asher, JD’s pride overflowed; he often told him he was a “beast” on the football field, certain he could run through anything.
With Brynlee, JD may have been uncertain at first about her wrestling, but he was quickly won over by her grit and success, beaming with pride at every victory.
With Mackenzie, JD shared a close relationship full of laughter and an ongoing years-long game of “you’re it.” They shared special milestones and adventures across the country. .
Above all, JD prioritized family, and his grandchildren knew him as an attentive, loving presence who celebrated their victories, comforted their struggles, and shared their everyday joys.
JD’s life will be honored in Alberta, where his ashes will be scattered. In lieu of flowers or memorials, the family asks that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in his name, a cause close to his heart. Donations can be made at: https://bit.ly/jdmcneil
He leaves behind a legacy of service, teaching, loyalty, and love that will live on in his family and in all those whose lives he touched.
