Hebron, NY – Bernice Wallman, age 93, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday, April 6, 2014.
Bernice was born on January 27, 1921 in New Haven, CT the daughter of Charles and Frances (Levenstein) Roth.
Bernice was a graduate of the Yale School of Art. Her first endeavor was a silk screening business.
Bernice married Jerold M. Wallman on June 5, 1949. Jerold brought into the marriage two sons. So Bernice had a ready-made family. 11 months into the marriage Jerold and Bernice became parents to a baby of their own, closely followed by four more of their own. Together they were a family with seven children.
When Jerold retired they decided they wanted a more “rural” life. They bought their home in Hebron in 1971. There were still two children at home that made the move with them, Nathaniel and Joshua.
Bernice embraced the country life and set about volunteering in the area in many capacities and organization. Most of which she was still involved in to this day. She and Jerold had a beautiful garden at their home, and Bernice became a member of the Garden Club and also a judge for flower shows. She learned the art of rug hooking, she took many art classes and even took up bowling in the Friday Morning Coffee and Donut League. She always kept her mind sharp with her thirst for knowledge. She continually took classes to learn new things or become more accomplished. Bernice was very artistic. Her home is filled with her wonderful painting. She also leaves behind a legacy on the walls of the Children’s Room at the Pember Library and Museum. Until very recently she drove herself to all of her classes and social events. She had a weekly commitment to Dominos.
Jerold and Bernice shared their love of gardening, both vegetable and flowers. She tried her hand at making wines and brandies. Her jams and jellies were favorites as well.
Her home was a true home in every sense of the word. She always made visitors feel welcome. She hosted club events at her home, the family had weddings at the house and every Thanksgiving her home resounded with laughter when her entire family gathers to give thanks for each other.
Bernice was predeceased by her husband Jerold Wallman in 1995 and a sister Norma Roth. Survivors are her children:Jonathan of Alexandria, VA, David of Greenwich, CT, Samuel and Nathaniel of Stamford, CT, Joshua of Sacramento, CA, Mary Wallman of Philadelphia, PA and Sarah Cipcich of Santa Rosa, CA. In addition she was blessed with 14 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
