Bertha T. Thompson, 96, passed away in her sleep at Bethel Health Care Center on June 23, 2015. She was born on May 10, 1919 to the late Michael and Anna (Kotula) Krupnik of Stamford CT. She was a 31 year resident of South Salem, NY in the home she and her late husband, Joseph T. Thompson, built. They were engaged on Valentine’s Day 1948 and were married for almost 47 years at the time of his passing.
Bertha was a World War II veteran and very proud of her service in the WAVES, during which she was stationed at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Brooklyn, NY. After the war, she obtained her GED and graduated from Merrill Business School. She retired from the Door Oliver Corporation in 1984, where she worked as a Purchasing Secretary.
She loved cooking, baking deserts, sewing, and quilting. She spent many hours working beside her mother in the kitchen, learning to make pierogis, gołumpkis, and kapusta and passed the art on to her two daughters. She was always trying some new desert recipe she found in a cookbook or in the newspaper and treating her family and friends to it. She made many quilts for family members over the years, especially baby quilts. When her daughters were very young, she made them matching dresses, and they were often mistaken for twins. She even made her own wedding dress.
Besides her daughter Carol Kubis and husband Robert of Bethel, CT, she is also survived by her sisters Kathryn Riska of East Petersburg, PA and Joan Sienkiewicz of Stamford, CT. She has many surviving nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.
Bertha is predeceased by her husband Joseph, her infant son Joseph, her daughter Diana Mary Tomczyk, her parents Michael and Anna Krupnik, four brothers John, Stanley, Alexander, and Bernard Krupnik and one sister Julia Koules. She is also predeceased by her husband’s parents, Jacob and Maryann (Tamco) Tomczyk, his three brothers Anthony Tomczyk, Sr., Thomas Thompson, and Peter Thompson, and his two sisters Catherine Williams and Anne Thompson.
The family would like to express their appreciation for the kind and compassionate care she received as a resident of the Cascades Assisted Living and Bethel Health Care Center.
