

David was born in Baltimore, MD, to Troy and Eunice Kniffin, then moved with his family at a young age to Kansas City, MO. He graduated from Central High School, and was awarded a scholarship that enabled him to attend Yale University, where he received a BA in economics in 1963. He then attended the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania for his MBA in 1966. He pursued a career in investment management first as a securities analyst for H.C. Wainwright, then equities portfolio manager at Metropolitan Life, and finally as Director of Equity Investments at the United Church of Christ Pension Boards. He was a member of the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts.
Outside of work, David enjoyed playing bridge and chess, and was a skilled photographer. His photographs of natural scenes during trips to Naushon Island, Yosemite, Bryce Canyon and many other destinations are treasured by his family and friends. He participated in various community activities and clubs including Indian Harbor Yacht Club, Yale Alumni Association of Greenwich, the Horseneck Club of Greenwich, and the Darien Cotillion.
After the death of his son Greg at age 18, David led the Connecticut chapter of the League of Victims, a support group for families of homicide victims, for twelve years. In retirement, he traveled extensively, including destinations such as South America, Australia, New Zealand, Egypt, China, and Europe. For many trips he was joined by his dear friend Caryl Bate. He also delighted in Caribbean and cruise vacations with his daughter Bethany and family, and Caryl’s family.
He is survived by his daughter Bethany (Anthony) Hoogs, grandchildren Alyssa and Jesse Hoogs, Caryl Bate, her children Bryce Breen and Marnee Rogerson, her grandchildren Christian Rogerson and Emmett Breen, and David’s nieces and nephews Joy (Bryan) Graveline, Mark Kniffin, John Vickers and Robert Vickers. He was predeceased by his son Greg Kniffin, sister Dorothy Vickers, brother Troy Kniffin Jr. and sister-in-law Georgiana Kniffin.
