Lucille Mable Grimley, 95, of Stamford, CT, passed away peacefully on April 21, 2026. Born on April 27, 1930, in Delmont, South Dakota, Lucille was the daughter of loving parents, William and Emilie. Raised on a family farm alongside her four siblings, she often spoke of her childhood with great affection, remembering a life that was modest in means but rich in happiness and faith.
In her early twenties, Lucille moved to Memphis, TN, where she worked as a switchboard operator for Stewart’s Inc. It was there she met the love of her life, James “Jim” Grimley, while he was visiting from New York on business. Their romance blossomed through more than a hundred love letters exchanged over a year of long-distance courtship. They were married on August 3, 1957, and eventually settled in Stamford, CT.
Lucille was a devoted mother to her four children and converted to Catholicism to share a unified faith with her family. She found great joy in gardening, card games, travel, and volunteering for her church, but her greatest passion was spending time with her family during the holidays. After retiring to Toms River, NJ, in the late 1980s, she faced the loss of Jim in 1992. Years later, she found a second chance at companionship with her dear friend Tony, with whom she shared 20 years of love, laughter, and friendship.
Lucille was strong in every sense of the word — physically, mentally, and spiritually. She overcame many hardships over the span of her life and will be remembered for her unwavering strength and resilience. Lucille ultimately lived 95 meaningful years, passing away just 6 days shy of her 96th birthday.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James; her son, Paul; her parents; and all her siblings, Wilma, Norma, Ruby, and Percy. She is survived by her daughters, Ellen Grimley, Barbara (Manny) Orr, and Joan (Jules) Somerstein; her four grandchildren, Paul, Kelly, Nicole, and Alexander; and her great-grandchild, Xzavier.
