Onide Jean-Guillaume, aged 79, passed peacefully on October 28, 2014 at her home in Stamford, CT. She was born on April 4, 1935, in Anse-à-Foleur, Haiti. She was the daughter of Arthur Jean-Guillaume and Anna-Lucia Jean-Pierre. Onide spent her formative years studying in Catholic schools in Haiti. Her academic gifts, call to service, and nurturing spirit allowed her to earn a scholarship to study and practice psychiatric nursing in Lausanne, Switzerland. Her transformative experience as a young Haitian woman studying in Europe provided Onide with a lifetime of cherished memories and life-long friends. After six years in Switzerland, she entered the United States and started her family in Brooklyn, NY. She moved to Stamford, CT in 1968 and spent the majority of her professional career as a private duty geriatric nurse. The last 10 years of her professional career were spent caring for individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities for Connecticut’s Department of Developmental Services. Onide remained in Stamford for the rest of her life, raising her large and loving family and numerous people who were drawn to her and sought her support. Onide, affectionately called Mummy to young and old, reflected a deep and inspiring commitment to her faith and her family. Her devotion to the Lord was evident in the pure, unconditional, and generous love that she freely offered to all. She had a deep love for all God’s creations, nurturing an abundant garden, numerous plants that decorate her home, and a variety of animals whose well-being concerned her. Mummy lived the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-12). Her joy came from honoring the least of us and no one was a stranger to her. Her memory will be celebrated by countless loved ones including her siblings Anaida, Berthe (Marc), Nicolas, Arthur (Yolaine); her children Anna (Norvell), Annemarie, Rock (Sue), Elie (Denise), Jean (Jill), Max (Sabrina), Gary, (Ruwani), Danielle (Shelton); grandchildren Norvell, Donnell, Ernie, Josie, Evan, Drew, Kobe, Eric, Amber, Elijah, Taylor, Makayla, Christine, Michelle (Tayyab), Amanda, Sarah, Avanthi, Sienna, and Eliette; one great-grandson Zaid; beloved nieces and nephews Arthur (Jessica), Vonick (Daniel), Kharline (Clive), and Marie-Julie; and grand-nephews and nieces Louis (Meghan), Marc, Manny, Barbara, Rylie, Dashiell, and Arthur. She touched the hearts of innumerable relatives throughout the world. Onide was predeceased by her brothers Michel and Chenet and daughter Rose-Astrid. We will miss you and love you always, Tutu!
