Born in Glen Cove, New York, he was the son of John and Birgit Murray. He graduated from Lehigh University with a Bachelor of Science in Business, Economics and Accounting. A certified public accountant, he began his career at Coopers & Lybrand in 1956, where he spent 40 years building a distinguished career. Over time, he rose to become National Director of Accounting, Auditing and SEC Services, and was widely respected for his expertise, sound judgment, and steady leadership.
He was a longtime member of the firm’s governing body, the Firm Council, and played an important role both within the firm and across the accounting profession. He served on several key professional and standard-setting organizations, including the Emerging Issues Task Force of the Financial Accounting Standards Board, the Accounting Standards Executive Committee of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the International Accounting Standards Committee.
He was known to many as a thoughtful leader, a trusted colleague, and a generous mentor who took a genuine interest in the people he worked with. He retired in 1996.
Outside of work, he was an avid golfer, skier, walker, bridge player, reader, and Brooklyn Dodgers fan, and he loved crossword puzzles. He was deeply involved in the game of golf, contributing his time to golf course rating and officiating. He also gave back to his community in many ways, including volunteering to read to children.
He loved traveling the world with his family and had a lifelong passion for history. Endlessly curious, he was always reading, learning, and eager to better understand the world around him. Above all, he cherished his family and treasured the time he spent with them.
He will be remembered for his generosity, kindness, warmth, and sense of humor, and for the lasting impact he had on all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years Judith, his daughters, Jennifer, Kristin and Suzanne and his sons-in-law Robert Van Allen and Eric Mabbett. He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Gerald Murray.
