

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Anthony M. Mauro, 84, of West Brighton, a retired officer with the Triborough Bridge & Tunnel Authority and union official who advocated for workers rights, died Wednesday in Richmond University Medical Center in his home community.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, Mr. Mauro moved to Staten Island in 1973 and settled in West Brighton.
Mr. Mauro was an officer with the Triborough Bridge & Tunnel Authority from 1952 to 1990.
He founded Local 1396 and served as president of the Triborough Bridge & Tunnel Officers Union.
Mr. Mauro was a relentless advocate for workers rights and highlighted the affects of vehicular pollution on bridge and tunnel employees. He won numerous awards for his efforts.
Mr. Mauro was a member of the American Lung Association of Brooklyn for 25 years and served a term as president.
He was also a member of the Columbia Association of the TBTA and the founder of the Bridge and Tunnel Officers Benevolent Association.
In his retirement, Mr. Mauro served as a consultant to Borough Hall on bridges and tunnels.
A Civil War buff, he enjoyed collecting Civil War memorabilia.
Mr. Mauro was also an animal lover and was devoted to his dog, Che-Che, and cat, Charlene.
His wife of 41 years, the former Elizabeth Ficht, died in 1991.
The funeral will be Tuesday from the Casey Funeral Home, with a 10:45 a.m. mass in St. Teresa's R.C. Church, both Castleton Corners. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Brooklyn.
