Loving family matriarch who brought happiness to all she touched
Assunta (Susan) Mazza, 93, peacefully passed away on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2018, at her home in Plano, Texas.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she graduated from New Utrecht High School and attended Hunter College. In addition to working for the War Assets Administration after World War II, one of her fondest memories was working at the exclusive clothier, Jay Thorpe.
Susan moved to Great Kills in 1972, where she lived with her husband, Vincent, and their children. Bringing joy to her family with all that she did, she was a loving Christian, deeply rooted in her faith, supporting many Catholic charities. Staten Island was home to Mrs. Mazza for many years, where her weekends revolved around cooking and welcoming family and friends into her home. One of her greatest attributes was her perspective on life.
In 1997, Susan relocated with her husband to Chicago, Ill., where she helped raise her granddaughter, Jana. Years later in 2011, she moved to Plano, Texas, with her husband, to be near her daughter.
Susan was the beloved wife of 54 years of the late Vincent, who passed away in 2014. She is survived by her two loving children, Vincent and Teresa; granddaughter, Jana; son-in-law, Tim; daughter-in-law, Teri; loving caregiver, Tracey Gibbs, and of course, loving family pet, Hobbes.
Visitation is at Harmon Funeral Home Wednesday, Sept. 26, from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Clare's Roman Catholic Church, followed by interment at Moravian Cemetery.
