

Barbara McCormack, nee Chapman, was born on Staten Island on June 13, 1948, to parents Edward and Joyce Chapman. She died peacefully, in her home in Great Kills, on December 24, 2025. She was preceded in death by her parents, and by her husband, Stephen McCormack.
Barbara graduated from Tottenville High School in 1965, and then earned a Certificate in Nursing from the St. Luke’s School of Nursing, in Harlem. She worked as a Registered Nurse in several different specialties, including acute care, dialysis, and long term care, meeting her husband, Stephen, at work at Richmond Memorial Hospital in 1973. Being an RN defined many aspects of her life and personality. She retired as an Assistant Director of Nursing from Carmel Richmond Nursing Home in 2011.
Barbara was a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees, and delighted in attending the victory parades held in Lower Manhattan for the 90s dynasty teams. She was a Jeep enthusiast, and owned several Jeep Cherokees. She enjoyed city life and culture, often visiting museums and restaurants in Manhattan. An avid reader of romance and fantasy novels, she also enjoyed classic television and black and white movies. A lover of classic rock, she attended many concerts in small venues with her husband, Stephen. Barbara was an early riser, and looked forward to her morning coffee; she loved a cold beer, a rare burger, and a gossip session with her family.
Barbara, known to her loved ones as Schmoozie or Grandma, is survived by her daughter, Kelly Vassallo, son in law, Joseph Vassallo, his son Joseph Vassallo, and granddaughters Shannon and Erin Vassallo; brother Michael Chapman, brother Jack Chapman and his wife Joan, niece Julie Chapman, nephew Jack Chapman, his wife Emily and daughter Ivy, and brother Bill Chapman, his wife Josie, and nephew Bryan Chapman.
Visitation will be held at Casey-McCallum Rice Funeral Home, located at 30 Nelson Avenue, Staten Island, NY, 10308, on December 28, 2025, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and again from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
The funeral service will take place at the same location on December 29, 2025, from 10:00 am to 10:30 am.
