With deep sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Carol, on July 24, 2025, at the age of 79. A woman of kindness, wit, and boundless love, she leaves behind a legacy that will forever be cherished by her family and friends.
Born on March 17, 1946, in Brooklyn, NY, Carol Orlando was a high school graduate who spent much of her life devoted to those she loved and the passions that brought her joy. She was an avid bird breeder, finding peace and purpose in caring for her beloved birds. Her feathered companions brought her joy with her late husband, Bob and friends as they competed in shows up and down the east coast. After her husband passed away, she took up new hobbies including caring for furry friends Raisin and her beloved Chanel who passed away just 2 months before her death.
Raising 3 active boys was certainly a challenge for Carol, but she found an incredible place in Marshalls Creek, PA called Otter Lake campground. She introduced her boys to the outdoors in the Poconos, and they went on to meet some lifelong friends, while spending the better part of 10 summers away from home. Bobby, Richie, and Mike have continued the tradition and still make at least one trip annually to the campground as a nostalgic tribute to their mom and dad.
In addition to her love for animals, Carol was a true cruising enthusiast, always seeking new adventures and moments of serenity on the open seas. Her heart was as free as the wind, whether exploring the Caribbean waters or traversing the Mediterranean with her best friend Rhoda, who will continue to hold a special place in the hearts of those who knew her for the amazing companionship.
For many years, Carol served as a dedicated kitchen manager within the New York City school system. With precision and care, she made sure that every meal served was one of comfort, warmth, and nutrition, touching the lives of countless children, colleagues, and families along the way.
A member of St. Claire Church, Carol found strength and peace in her faith, and her presence at the church was a source of inspiration to many. Her unwavering belief and devotion to her community were integral parts of who she was.
Known for her sharp mind and sense of humor, she had a passion for games that exercised the brain—whether it was trivia, crossword puzzles, or other brain teasers. Her love for a good challenge was a reflection of her curiosity and lifelong learning.
Carol is survived by her children, Robert Orlando, Richard Orlando, Michael Orlando, Daughter-in-Laws Lisa Orlando, Melissa Orlando, and Flora DiMeo, and grandchildren, Michael Orlando, Matthew Orlando, Isabella Orlando, Serena Orlando, Samantha Orlando and Sophia Orlando and friends who will remember her for her boundless love, her strength, and her ability to brighten any room. She was also deeply loved by her pets, who were never far from her side.
She was predeceased by her mom, Ann O’Connor, husband, Bob Orlando, and brother, Bob Van Havere.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Monday, July 28, 2025 at Casey-McCallum Rice funeral home located at 30 Nelson Ave, Staten Island, NY 10308.
The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 29, 2025 at St. Claire’s Church located at 110 Nelson Ave, Staten Island, NY 10308. A private committal will follow the funeral at the Cemetery.
