Donald E. O’Shea (Doc), 89 years old, a longtime Staten Island resident passed, Friday, Oct. 5, 2018 in the warmth of his own home. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 53 years, Therese H. (Morris) whose pride, faith and love they bestowed upon five children, twelve grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
After graduating from St. Bonaventure University, he immediately enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in combat in the 64th Tank Battalion in the Korean War, for which he was awarded the Korean Service Medal with a Bronze Service Star and The Purple Heart Medal. He was a prideful commander of the American Legion Floyd Bennett Post in Brooklyn upon his return.
During his time away, his future wife sent numerous care packages filled with Milky Ways and other personal items. Upon returning to Brooklyn, Therese and Doc married at St. Theresa’s Parish. Through the years Therese was enamored by Doc’s confidence and social skills. An eventual move to Staten Island, before the bridge, brought them their first home and many wonderful years in front of the family fire place. As a father, Doc, volunteered as a coach of many sports, Treasurer of the Youth Activities Counsel, and an example to his family of strength and honor. Throughout the years Doc received Milky Ways from his beloved wife at Christmas to the puzzlement of his children. Their long marriage included washing and drying dishes every evening as their therapy. Doc never drove a car; for him public transportation was the way to go.
His professional life started at the Journal of Commerce, and he retired as a Senior TNT Editor of Knight-Ridder News. A devoted parishioner, and active volunteer at Sacred Heart Church, he served as a lector well into his 89th year.
Arrangements are by Harmon Funeral Home and a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 on Tuesday, October 9th at Sacred Heart Church. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to Sacred Heart Parish.
