Douglas A. Elwell, a Great Kills resident of Staten Island, NY, was born on March 24, 1955, and passed away peacefully at Mt. Sinai Hospital, surrounded by his loving family on October 25, 2025, at the age of 70.
Doug was born in Staten Island, NY to Lillian Foster-Elwell and Frank Elwell. A 4th generation Staten Islander, Doug grew up on the North Shore of Staten Island in Clifton. He was a graduate of Curtis High School and St. John’s University.
In 1980, Doug met the love of his life, Donna Marone. They were married on October 29, 1983 and spent 42 beautiful years together. He is survived by his loving wife Donna, son Douglas (Victoria) Elwell, daughter Kristina (Mike) Senese, and his cherished grandchildren Jameson, Harper, and Sydney Elwell. Brother to Vivian Murray and Roger (Nancy) Elwell. Brother-in-law to Mary Elwell, AnnMarie DeVincenzo, and Frank (Susan) Marone. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is predeceased by his parents, in-laws Frank and Rachel Marone, brother Arthur Elwell, and brother-in-law Roy DeVincenzo.
Doug was the true definition of a “family man”. He devoted his entire life to his wife, children, and grandchildren, always putting everyone else’s needs before his own. His 3 grandchildren were the apple of his eye. He was so proud to be a Grandpa. Doug always looked forward to family gatherings, whether it was an outdoor BBQ or holiday get together. He enjoyed the warm weather months, where he would work on outdoor projects and lounge in the backyard, floating in the pool. He liked to take long walks and his perfect walking companion was his granddog, Petey.
Doug loved to tell a good story or joke. One of his favorite stories to share with family and friends came from one of his many exciting business trips around the world. In 1990, Doug had the honor of being a passenger on the Concorde. He flew from JFK to London Heathrow Airport in the lap of luxury for the experience of a lifetime.
For 45 years, Doug worked at various corporations in the Maritime Industry. As a Sales Executive, he was a provider of containers and chassis to steamship lines and motor carriers up and down the East Coast. He was a proud member of many trade networking associations. In the Port of NY/NJ, he was a member of the Association of the Bi-State Motor Carriers, Foreign Freight Traffic Association, Traffic Club of NY, Traffic Club of Newark, Port Users Group, Foreign Commerce Club, and NJ Motor Truck Association. In Philadelphia, PA, he was a member of the Traffic Club of Philadelphia and World Trade Association. In Baltimore, MD, he was a member of Maryland Motor Truck Association, Propeller Club of Baltimore (where he enjoyed his yearly trips to the “Crab Fest”), and Traffic Club of Baltimore. In Norfolk, VA, he was a member of the Tidewater Motor Truck Association and Virginia Maritime Association.
In Doug’s younger days, he spent many years coaching and volunteering for his children’s sporting events, but the best part was he was their biggest fan. He was a pillar in the St. Clare’s community as the Basketball Coordinator and CYO coach. He organized many fundraisers and events for the parish, including golf outings.
Doug touched the lives of many people and will be missed beyond measure.
