Emil Jay Blum, age 90, sadly left us on August, 20, 2023. He was a resident of Eger Lutheran Home for the last year. Born in Concord, he lived in Windham, NY, Stapleton, and finally in Great Kills for the last 60 years.
He was pre-deceased by his parents, Emil and Anna (Auer) and two older brothers, Robert and Richard, all of Staten Island. His dear wife Jacqueline (Bamford) passed away in 2017.
“Jay” was a graduate of PS 12 (Concord), and the Windham-Ashland-Jewett Central School, Class of 1951. He graduated from the College of Staten Island with a degree in Accounting with honors.
Jay served in the US Army during the Korean conflict. After his service, he entered the printing industry, first with AMAX (NYC), then Richmont College, which became the College of Staten Island. He was the Reprographics Supervisor for both campuses until his retirement in 1998.
Jay was an avid photographer and carpenter. His love of photography was passed down to his children and grandchildren, who proudly still use his camera equipment today. His woodworking skills were top notch. He crafted many toys, dollhouses, and home items for his family. Some of his creations are now being enjoyed by his great-grandchild. One of his dollhouses was featured in the Staten Island Advance. He also enjoyed gardening, reading, and had a keen interest in American History and comparative religion.
Jay was a faithful member and volunteer at Christ Lutheran Church (Great Kills). He attended Bible Study, served on Church Council, kept the Cornish Rose Garden blooming, and polished the brass for all holidays.
He was a member of Beacon Light Masonic Lodge, as was his father, and a member of the Masonic War Vets.
His joy was his family: wife Jackie (Bamford), daughters Barbara Blum(SI), Nanette and son-in-law Jose Reis(NJ), grandchildren Michael and wife Jessica (CA), Cristina Reis and partner Stephen Musto(NJ), and was proud to be called a great grandfather by Finn Emil and Eleanor James Reis (CA). His family adored him, his big heart, and his great sense of humor. He will be sorely missed by all that knew him.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation in his memory to Meals-On-Wheels of Staten Island Inc., 304 Port Richmond Avenue, 10302 or the Memorial Fund of Christ Lutheran Church, 121 Cleveland Avenue, 10308.
