Estelle Neube

Beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Estelle Neube (nee Mangin), 90, passed peacefully at home on Sunday, November 7, 2021. She was the daughter of the late Esther (Spicer) Mangin and Clarence Mangin.

Estelle (affectionately known as “Tudy”) was born in Stapleton on Staten Island on December 19, 1930. She was a descendant of the Sandy Ground community in Rossville, the oldest continuously inhabited free black settlement in the United States, and it was in Sandy Ground where as a teenager she met the love of her life, Alex Neube. After graduating from McKee High School, where she became a very talented seamstress, she worked for a short time in the garment district in Manhattan until Alex returned from the Korean War, whereupon they got married and started their family. They were married in 1953 and relocated to Dongan Hills, eventually settling in Port Richmond and then moving to Newtonville, New Jersey for a short time. They came back to Staten Island in West Brighton and then finally, just two days before she passed, moved back to Charleston in Staten Island, a stone’s throw from Sandy Ground where it all started.

Tudy was a very devoted and loving mother and homemaker. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, going to Atlantic City and watching Judge Judy. She also enjoyed listening to Jimmy Swaggart and his choir on television. Tudy was a very caring and generous person who will be dearly missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her loving husband of 68 years, Alex Neube, and her six children: Alex Neube, Jr. (Redetha) of California, Wanda Marshall (Stephen) of Maryland, Darryl Neube (Mardra) of New Jersey, Gail Neube of Staten Island, Robin Cassell (Rodney) of Poughkeepsie, New York and Brian Neube (Toinette) of Virginia. She will be deeply missed by her 18 grandchildren: Melanie Neube, Alex Neube III, Danielle Plyler (Joshua), Jason Neube (Kerri), Christopher Neube, David Neube (Cynthia), Lamar Page (Imani), Joshua Page, Sharise Delp (Doug), Darryl Neube, Jr. (Elizabeth), Autumn Neube, Camille Neube, Sierra Cassell, Rodney Cassell II, Savannah Cassell, Brian Neube, Jr., Christian Neube and Izayah Davis. Tudy adored her 25 great-grandchildren: Justin Neube, Isaac, Samuel, Lillian and Natalie Plyler, Elijah and Alexa Neube, David, Jr., Adrian and Jaxson Neube, Jahda, Jahved, Jahsata, Makai, Makayla, Mila and Jaelyn Page, Moriah, Levi, Asher, Benjamin, Jesse and Seth Neube, Kaleb and Ava Ruff. She is also survived by her beloved sisters, Lorraine Braxton and Julia Smith and many nieces and nephews.
