Esther, born and raised in Travis, was the daughter of Mate Porubcsanszky and Veronika Szmola, who arrived at Ellis Island from Hungary in 1912. They remained Staten Island residents where they raised Esther and her four siblings; Rose, Marty, Joe and Ida.
Esther and her husband, John Traks, met while in their youth and later married after John returned home from WWII. They went on to build a home in the Meiers Corner section of the island where they raised their two sons, John and Edward. Esther was very active in her son’s many sports and school activities, including the Mother’s Guild at Augustinian Academy in Grymes Hill. Esther was also a devoted member of her church community at St. Rita’s on Bradley Avenue.
After raising her children, Esther joined her husband in working for the Staten Island Public Schools as an administrator for the custodial engineering department. Later she went on to serve as a legal assistant for her nephew Peter Skorney’s law practice.
In addition to being a beloved and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Esther delighted her many friends and guests over the years with her skills as a host. In particular, her culinary expertise were enjoyed by all throughout the years.
Esther was a wonderful person who would do anything for her family. She particularly enjoyed spending her summers with family at her neighboring son’s houses on the Sacandaga Lake. She was a kind and generous friend and was always up for a game of Rummikub or Scrabble. She will be dearly missed by all.
Esther was predeceased by her husband, who passed away in 2001 and her son, Edward, who passed away in 2009. She is survived by her son, John, daughter-in-laws; Diane and Ellen, four grandchildren; Christine, Susan, Elizabeth and Joseph, and four great-grandchildren.
