Staten Island—Florence (Flo) Callahan was born in Brooklyn, New York on January 3rd,1933 to Florence and Walter Janosek. She grew up in Greenpoint, Brooklyn before moving to Gerritsen Beach. After high school Florence worked as a comptometer operator at Tidewater Oil Company in Battery Park, Manhattan. She fell in love with Charles Callahan (Cal), a Korean War Veteran, also from Gerritsen Beach, and they were married on November 8th, 1958. In 1964 they moved to Staten Island where they raised their family. They remained married for 55 years until Cal’s passing on December 31st, 2013. After Cal retired from his position as the Director of Printing for the NYPD, they enjoyed 20 years together in the south Jersey Pine Barrens, in and around Atlantic City. Flo and Cal truly enjoyed a wonderful life together!!
Florence is survived by her three children, Patty and her husband Steve Larsen, Margaret and her husband Tommy Kahles, and Jimmy and his wife Amber Rhodes. A loving grandma, she is also survived by her beloved grandson John Kahles and his wife Amanda, and granddaughter Elizabeth (Lizzie) Kahles. She was preceded in death by her siblings Walter Janosek, Geraldine Oberg, and Theresa Beatty. Although she sorely missed her husband and her siblings, Florence loved her family and was happy every day! She loved her life! She loved to eat (especially ice cream), drink, dance and listen to music. She also loved the winter, the snow, being outdoors, nature, animals, and most of all…she loved Christmas! She was truly a beautiful soul whose memory and spirit will live on and shine through in the lives of her children and grandchildren, each of whom will miss her dearly every day!!
In remembrance of Florence Callahan’s life, the family respectfully asks that any charitable donations be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital https://fundraising.stjude.org/site/TR?px=8700053&fr_id=154020&pg=personal
