Dear Pat and family, 
Carmine and I are so sorry for your loss. Gerry was a neighbor who always had a smile on his face and a friendly greeting for all.  We miss the friendly chats we had as we drove by, and, as usual, he’d be working on his lawn or trimming his bushes.  I really appreciated how he came up to the Railroad to stay with me when I had my accident.  Our deepest sympathies to all of you.

My heart felt condolences  to the entire family. It was my pleasure to work with Gerry for many years at Canarsie. I loved walking into the kitchen for the start of a 24 hour tour and seeing Gerry and knowing we were going to work together for the next 24. Such a great personality always laughing and we had such great conversation  throughout the tour.  Having worked over 38 years in the FD I could not think of anyone who was more dedicated to the FDNY. He truly loved the job and took such great care of the Firefighters. We had some really interesting and challenging fires together and he was one of the toughest and most capable fire officers I have ever encountered. It gave me great comfort at a really difficult fire to know that he was inside and in charge.  He set an amazing example to all of the firefighters but particularly the probies of the attitude to have regardless of how tough a tour was... 10 runs after midnight and I would see him in the kitchen and I would say that was a tough night for you guys . He would respond without a moments notice " Great tour.. Great tour that's what we are here for"... always ready for more.  I would often site him to others as the perfect example of a great fire officer who set the example  for everyone else.. I will miss him --Dan Mundy BN 58

My condolences to the Leonard family on the loss of a Great Man. So sad and so young. 
My funny times with Gerry was being on the other side of the fire radio when he called. I would never tell him to remain in service ,always sent him to the fire. 
When you enter the pearly gates , the boys will say Gerry get another line !!
To his 3  boys on the job , always do good to keep Dad’s memory alive. God Bless you Gerry. Thoughts and prayers to the Leonard family.

I was so deeply saddened upon hearing of your loss.  I was one of  Gerry’s lieutenants and he was always ready, willing and able whenever called upon.  He was apt and daring, a true fireman’s fireman.  I pray that memories of Gerry will bring us comfort and keep him alive in our hearts and minds forever.
