Born in Brooklyn, he was brought to Sunnyside as a child. He also lived briefly in Port Richmond before settling in Castleton Corners in the late 1940s.
He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He then worked for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in Manhattan in a variety of capacities, retiring in 1982 as a manager in the electronic installations department.
Mr. Knudsen was the recipient of the 1993 Distinguished Disciple Award from the Metropolitan New York Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. He served as congregation president during multiple six-year terms at Zion Lutheran Church. He also was recognized for his volunteer work at the Eger Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, where he served on the board of trustees. He also served on the board of trustees of the Eger Foundation. He also led the Christian worship service at Golden Gate Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Meiers Corners for over 30 years.
His wife of 62 years, the former Evelyn Gustavsen, died in 2007.
Surviving are three sons, Daniel, Paul and David; three daughters, Carol Cummings, Lois Thomas and Beverly Knudsen; 15 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Friday at 1 p.m. in the Zion Lutheran Church, Willowbrook. Burial will follow in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp. Arrangements are being handled by the Casey Funeral Home, Castleton Corners.
