

James Hyland, 79, died Aug. 15, 2017 at Staten Island University Hospital North. He was a lifelong Staten Islander. He was raised in New Dorp, graduated from New Dorp High School, and eventually settled in Dongan Hills.
James was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and proudly served as a New York firefighter for 33 years. He was with Engine 9 in Manhattan and Engine 166 on Staten Island. He enjoyed traveling and spending time at his house in Pennsylvania.
James is survived by his wife of 52 years, Linda (nee Healy); sons, James (Elizabeth), Daniel, and John, and daughter, Lori; sisters, Patricia Ruhl, Maureen Hansen, and Barbara Adone, and grandchildren, Raymond, Jamie, Jennifer, Kaitlyn, Lauryn, and James. He was predeceased by his son, Kenneth.
Visitation will be at the Casey Funeral Home on Thursday, Aug. 17, from 7 to 9 p.m. and on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday at St. Teresa's at 9:30 a.m. Burial will be at St. Peter's Cemetery.
