STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Joan Giles, 83, a retired secretary and Sunday School teacher, died Friday in her Great Kills home after a long illness.
Born Joan Long in Brooklyn, she moved to Great Kills in 1963.
Mrs. Giles was a secretary for the Home Life Insurance Co., Manhattan, for nine years and for the New York Institute of Finance, also Manhattan, for five years.
She was a graduate of Erasmus Hall High School, Brooklyn.
Mrs. Giles was a Sunday School teacher at Christ Lutheran Church, Great Kills. She also enjoyed visiting Atlantic City and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchild.
She attended Christ Lutheran Church.
Surviving Mrs. Giles are her daughters, Gail Natale and Lisa Rogers; four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, John Giles, in 2003 and by her granddaughter, Joanna, in 2013.
There will be a funeral service Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Casey McCallum Rice South Shore Funeral Home, Great Kills. Burial will be in Ocean View Cemetery, Oakwood.
