

Joan Flaherty McLoughlin, 84, died on April 20, 2017, due to complications from dementia. She was a resident of Carmel Richmond Nursing Home. She passed peacefully while listening to classical music. She was loved by all. Born on Feb. 15, 1933, on Staten Island and raised in Brooklyn, she was the oldest child of eight children. Her parents were the late John and Katherine Flaherty. After graduating from school, she worked briefly at the telephone company as an operator. In June 1955, she married the late Donald McLoughlin. Their union lasted 26 years. Joan's first three children were born in Brooklyn. In 1964, she and her husband decided to settle in the Westerleigh section of Staten Island. Joan always liked to point out she moved to the island before the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge was opened. The couple then had two more children for a total of five. Joan enjoyed being a homemaker for 19 years. In 1974, she decided to go back to work taking a job in a women's clothing store in the newly opened Staten Island Mall. In 1975, she began work as a bank teller at Westerleigh Savings and Loan on Jewett Avenue. Eventually the bank was purchased by Richmond County Savings Bank. Joan enjoyed a long career with the bank retiring in the late 1990's as an assistant manager. Joan loved reading books, tending to her garden and spending time with her dear family and friends. She was the beloved mother to Jacqueline and John Chisholm, Karen and Steve Swartz, Brian and Christine McLoughlin, Gavin McLoughlin and John and Megan Gavrity. Also, the beloved grandmother to Erin Giordano, Stephen and Kerry Swartz, Connor and Kelsey McLoughlin and Aidan Gavrity. She was adored by all her siblings, their spouses and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends today, Sunday, April 23, at Casey's Funeral Home at 350 Slosson Ave., Staten Island, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 24, at Blessed Sacrament Church on Forest Avenue.
