Joan Alice Mohlenhoff (née Potusek), beloved wife of Bill; mother to Bill (Chris), Joy, and Craig (Amy); sister to Diane and John (Barbara); grandmother to Stephen, James, Kerry (Andrew), Clare (Diya), Matthew, Ben, Emma (Evan), and Hannah; and great-grandmother to Lily, Aidan, Oliver, Kieran, Violet, and Baby Alhamadneh on the way, passed on to her heavenly home on Monday, May 18th, 2026 in Staten Island, New York. She was the devoted and beloved wife of her childhood sweetheart William “Bill” Mohlenhoff for 63 years.
A life-long resident of Staten Island, Joan dedicated her time in service to St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and School, serving as a Sunday School teacher for over 50 years. She also served on the Lady’s Guild and the church choir. Her faith in Jesus was central to her life.
Her hobbies included writing, painting, singing, and spending time with her grandchildren. She was known for her bright smile and sense of humor. She was able to laugh at herself and make other people smile and laugh too. Joan was known to wear her favorite colors – lilac and lavender. She often could be seen wearing a sheep pin or with a sheep sitting near her on the couch, which was her favorite animal as it reminded her of Jesus as the Good Shepherd. She was known to proudly live by the Potusek family motto of “life is short, eat dessert first,” even in her final days.
Joan will be dearly missed by her family, many friends, and church community.
Visitation will be held at Casey Funeral Home, 350 Slosson Ave, Staten Island, NY 10314, US, on May 20, 2026, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm, and from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
