March 10, 1958 – July 31, 2025
It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of John McAvoy, who left us on July 31st, 2025, following complications during an attempt to revive him after a heart attack. He was only 67 years old.
Born in Wyckoff Heights, Brooklyn, New York on March 10th, 1958, John was a proud Brooklyn native who later made Staten Island his home. Known for his big personality and even bigger heart, John made a lasting impact on those around him.
John spent much of his working life behind the wheel—whether serving ice cream to delighted children from the Lickety Split Ice Cream Truck or offering rides across Staten Island for various cab services. He was especially proud to be the driver, not just by profession, but for his daughter and her friends—always ready to lend a ride, a laugh, or a helping hand.
A lover of horse racing and a familiar face at OTB, John found joy in the thrill of the races and the camaraderie of fellow fans. His brash sense of humor, sharp wit, and magnetic personality could light up a room. He was the kind of man who made friends wherever he went and never hesitated to help someone in need—he truly would give the shirt off his back.
John was predeceased by his beloved parents, Marion and John McAvoy. He is survived by his loving sister Janice and his brothers Gary, Barry and Jeffrey. He leaves behind his devoted partner and friend of over 30 years, Joan Thiery, and their cherished daughter Christina, as well as his treasured grandchildren: Matthew, Isebella, Ariel, and Sebastian. John also had a deep bond with his step-son Johnny, whom he loved as his own.
John's memory will be held dearly by his family, many friends, and all those lucky enough to have known him.
