

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – John (Jack) V. Nevins, Jr., 86, of Great Kills, a retired city Police Officer, World War II veteran, loving father and grandfather, died Thursday in his home, following a short illness.
Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Nevins had lived in Great Kills since 1966. A New York City police officer for 25 years, he was assigned to many Brooklyn precincts during his career. He retired from the 78th Precinct in that borough in 1977. He later worked for the former AT&T Long Lines, Bedminster, N.J., as an office worker, for 15 years and retired in 1992.
Mr. Nevins served in Marines for one year in China at the end of World War II.
An avid golfer, Mr. Nevins particularly enjoyed playing golf in Spring Lake, N.J. He was also a fan of the New York Giants. “He was a great, loving father,’’ said his daughter, Ann Pack. “He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and family vacations.’’
He was a parishioner of St. Clare’s R.C. Church, Great Kills, and a longtime active member of the Stolzenthaler Council, Knights of Columbus, Tottenville.
In addition to his daughter, Ann, he is survived by his wife of 48 years, the former Jacqueline Tully; two sons, John V. III and Matthew; two sisters, Margaret Galligan and Joan McCourt, and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be Tuesday from the Casey McCallum-Rice Funeral Home, with a 9:45 a.m. mass in St. Clare’s Church, both Great Kills. Cremation will be private.
