Avis de décès de Joseph R. Bonamo Sr.
AUX SOINS DE

Casey McCallum Rice South Shore Funeral Home

Joseph R. Bonamo Sr., born on December 1, 1931, in New Brighton, passed away on June 12, 2025, at the age of 93. He was a lifelong resident of Staten Island, New York.

He graduated from Curtis High School and Baruch College. After completing his studies, Joseph served in the Army, taking on the role of corporal in Korea for two years. In 1957, his career took a significant turn when he joined the NYPD, where he attained the rank of detective and served diligently until his retirement in 1997. Alongside his commitment to the police department, Joseph worked for 30 years as a butcher at his father Anthony's shop, Butler's Market, in Rosebank.

In 1956, Joseph married Ann, and together they began a family, moving to Great Kills in 1961. They were blessed with four children: Joseph Bonamo Jr., William Bonamo (married to Margaret), Jennifer Brenner (married to Steve), and Jane Lede (married to Carlos). Joseph and Ann cherished their 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Joseph had a lifelong passion for sports, particularly enjoying the Yankees, and spent many delightful moments in Atlantic City. His commitment to his community was unmatched; he was a coach and director at the Great Kills Little League and served as the President of the Great Kills Community Center for 50 years. Joseph held the roles of President of all Senior Friendship Clubs on Staten Island and the AARB Chapter, was the Vice Commander of the Alan Kivlehan Korean War Veterans Post, and was an officer in the Staten Island 10-13 Club.

Joseph’s legacy will be remembered for the thoughtful and humorous individual he was, and his dedication to his family, career, and community has left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
