STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Native Staten Islander June Brown, 89, of Toms River, N.J., a retired nursing home employee who loved the beach and ocean and enjoyed line dancing, died Sunday in Community Medical Center, Toms River.
Born and raised June Wagenstein in Grant City, she also lived in Stapleton and New Dorp before settling in Dongan Hills in 1955. She lived there for 40 years before relocating to Toms River in 1995.
Mrs. Brown was a member of the housekeeping staff at Clove Lakes Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Castleton Corners, for a little over 10 years. She retired in 1991.
While living on the Island, she enjoyed being a member of the Dongan Hills, New Dorp and Todt Hill friendship clubs, and was a member of the Grant City Socialites.
Mrs. Brown loved line dancing and taught it to others. She also was fond of traveling, and had journeyed to Canada, the West Coast, Colorado, Florida and New Orleans. And she enjoyed pool swimming. But her passion was the beach and the ocean, and she especially loved going to the boardwalk at Seaside Heights, N.J.
Gilbert, her husband of 54 years, died in 1996.
Surviving are her son, Richard; her daughter, Valarie Kochovos; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
