Family man, dedicated Pop Warner coach for 40 years
Leonard "Lenny" Borg, 69, entered eternal rest on the morning of Dec. 24, 2016. He was born on Nov. 15, 1947, and raised in the family community of New Brighton by his parents, the late Emil A. Borg and Concetta (Verdiglione) Borg.
He resided in Annadale with his loving wife of 46 years, Margaret Borg (nee Heaney). The two had a summer home in Waretown, N.J., for 11 years where they enjoyed Long Beach Island and boating. He served in the army as a field artillery office. Lenny graduated magna cum laude from St. John's University with a bachelor's of science in criminal justice. He worked as a New York City police officer in the 71st Precinct in the 1970's and 80's as a "street cop." His fellow officers dubbed him the Duke.
Lenny's true enjoyment and passion was his 40-year career coaching Pop Warner/Staten Island boys football in the league named for his late Dad, Emil A. Borg Memorial Field in Travis. One of his favorite poems he shared with his many teams was "Don't Quit - To Stick to the fight when you're hardest hit, when things seem the worst you must not quit." He also enjoyed managing his son's baseball teams.
Lenny for many years was a jack of all trades, from mover, peddler, to landscaper. A hard worker, taking on no job too big or small to support his family. In his spare time he loved to cook, read, and bike. He was a consummate entertainer and the life of the party. Always happiest surrounded by friends and family, Lenny was extremely outgoing and to him no one was a stranger.
Survived by his wife, Margaret and children, Jennifer, Emil, Eric, Sean, and Scott; daughters-in-law, Maylee Young, Tissa Asperti, Rebecca Rafaniello, and Sherry Summers; grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Ben, Abigail, Matthew, Samantha, Georganna, Jennifer, Jessica, Eric James, Brittany, Stephanie, and Emily; siblings, Laura Siani, Lawrence, and Joseph; brother-in-law, Robert and sister-in-law, Fran, and 18 nieces and nephews.
"I traveled each highway, but much more than this I did it my way."
