Letterio (Leo) Morgante was born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1931 to Pietro and Rose Morgante. A proud Marine, Leo was drafted into the Marine Corps in 1951 and received a Purple Heart after being wounded in action in 1952.
In 1954, Leo married the love of his life, Vincenza (Vinny), and together they shared 71 years of marriage. They had three sons, Peter, Richard, and Robert, and were later blessed with six grandchildren.
Leo spent 20 years working in a machine shop before joining the U.S. Postal Service, where he served as a letter carrier for 25 years. At the Radio City Post Office, he became famous for showing up with pastries in hand from Buono’s Bakery.
Leo’s greatest joy was giving to others, especially through food. His famous calzones were a cherished tradition among family and friends, eagerly anticipated at every holiday. He also enjoyed tending his backyard garden and taking his children and grandchildren fishing and crabbing.
Since the 1960s, Leo looked forward to the family’s yearly vacations to Seaside Heights, NJ. There, he spent time at his favorite crabbing pier, filled his grandchildren’s pockets with quarters for the boardwalk, and treated his family to countless meals out.
Leo was a proud and active member of his community. He belonged to the American Legion Cespino-Russo Post for more than 50 years and was a member of both the Arrochar Friendship Club at the Staten Island Senior Center and Holy Rosary Church.
Leo always had a smile on his face and was always putting a smile on the faces of others. Whether it was telling a joke, showing up with a car full of groceries and cheesecake, or sneaking a $20 bill into your pocket, he was always doing his best to make others smile.
Leo is predeceased by his parents Pietro and Rose, and his son Robert.
He is survived by his sons Peter (Sandy) and Richard (Rosemarie); grandchildren Michael (Carissa), Mark (Veronica), Anthony (Erin), Brandi (Zach), Robert (Alaina), and Mandy; sisters Florence, Frances, Antionette, and Angie; and sister-in-law Alba.
