Born Madelyn James in Hartsville, S.C., she moved to the Bronx before settling on Staten Island in 1976.
Ms. Mitchell was educated at the College of Staten Island.
She was a talented painter and a gifted decorator.
Ms. Mitchell was a member of the Christian Faith Power Center Church, Stapleton. Angela Mitchell said her mother was devout and an inspiration to others,
She was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Ms. Mitchell’s son, Steven, died in 1992.
In addition to her daughter Angela, surviving are another daughter, Sharon; three sons, Rory, Talton (Casey) and Dirk; a brother, Robert James; three sisters, Carrie Lou Wilds, LeGertha James and Delores Pinkett; eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be tomorrow at noon in the Christian Faith Power Center Church. Arrangements, which include burial in Greenlawn Cemetery, Hartsville, are being handled by the Virginia Funeral Chapel, Dongan Hills.
