Born on June 7, 1925, in Scotland, she later made her home in Brooklyn and eventually Staten Island, where she built a legacy rooted in family and community.
Mary — also known as Mom, Grandma and Great Grandma — was the beloved wife of the love of her life, Sean Gillespie — affectionately known to many as “Pop Pop.” Their marriage was a true partnership and a lifelong love story, one that became the foundation for generations to come.
She was a devoted mother to seven children: Margaret Carney, John Gillespie, Mary Seychell, Patrick Gillespie, Michael Gillespie, Kathleen Toal, and Kevin Gillespie. As the matriarch of her family, Mary’s strength, guidance, and gentle wisdom shaped the lives of her children and all who followed.
Her grandchildren — Sara, Jessica, Joseph, Michael, Erin, Sean, Michael, Terrence, Lauren, Jennifer, Kevin, Sean and Olivia — were among her greatest joys. Nothing brought her more happiness than being surrounded by her growing family. She treasured her role as Grandma and Great Grandma, forming special bonds with each of her many great-grandchildren. Her home was a place of warmth, laughter, and unconditional love.
Mary was a woman of deep faith and an avid churchgoer. She was a friend to everyone she met. She had a gentle sense of humor that could brighten any room. She loved to read, crochet blankets, and watch crime shows.
Mary’s love extended beyond borders. She cherished her family both near and far, including relatives in Ireland, always holding them close in heart and prayer.
Mary’s century of life leaves behind a legacy of faith, family, strength, and enduring love that will continue through generations. She will be profoundly missed and forever remembered.
