Sonya Squires, departed this world peacefully on Saturday morning May 4, 2024, surrounded by her children. Her departure comes as a great shock and a deep wound, and it is gravely felt by her entire family.
Sonya was born on January 7, 1935. She was the 7th of 10 children born to Clarence and Elma Smith in Brooklyn, NY. Her childhood was spent in Brooklyn, with her wonderful brothers and sisters. She graduated from high school and met the love of her life, Lester Allen Squires, Sr. They became the proud parents of 5 children. They began to raise their family in Brooklyn and moved to Staten Island in 1965. Sonya was a seamstress and made a lot of her girls clothing when they were growing up, they were the envy of all school girls because their clothes were one of a kind and made with love! Sonya’s other hobby was crocheting, but she also made items to sell when she was asked to make a specific item. She crochet’d baby outfits for all her grandchildren when they were born. Sonya worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant at the Vanderbilt Nursing Home until her retirement in 1997. Her and her husband loved to travel to various places with some of their children, St. Thomas, the Bahamas and cruising the high seas was what they enjoyed doing together.
Sonya has always been an avid reader, and if you wanted to read one of the million books she had on the shelf, she would make you write your name in a composition book with the title, and date borrowed, when you returned it you’d sign it was returned, LOL. She has so many books you can’t even count them! Although she loved the authentic style of reading a book and turning the pages, as the tech era became popular she started using the Kindle and has had 4 kindles through the years and ordered at least one book a week! She began to create online puzzles which was a daily pastime for her, while catching up on a movie or playing with her 2 year old puppy Fluffy.
Sonya was devoted to her husband of 67 years. He departed this life before her in 2019. Her family, was of the utmost importance to her and her house was always open to each and everyone.
Her favorite saying was everything is in divine order and her legacy is love. She has impacted every single life she has come in contact with. When she spoke to you, her calm, soothing way made you feel special and accepted.
She leaves to mourn in profound sorrow, her daughter Deborah (Sonny) Watson, her son Lester (Diane) Squires Jr., daughter Janine (O’Byrne) Waithe, and daughter Christine Alexander. Two of her beloved Magnificent 7 sisters Nadine Brown, and Edina Smith. Eleven grandchildren and their spouses; Jermaine Thompson, Kevin & (Malaynee) Squires, Danielle Dale & (Jamie), Kymberlie & (Neil) DeAngelis, Shanice & (Marcus) Figueroa, Kendall & (Leilah) Squires, Nicole & (Pablo) Sandoval, Michael Alexander, Kaitha Waithe, and Khepre Waithe. Her daughter Robin Dale, and grandson Carlos Dale preceded her in death. Nineteen Great-grandchildren, and three Great-great-grandchildren. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends who will miss her presence dearly.
We rest in the fact that she is in her eternal home with Jesus.
“Wherever a beautiful soul has been, there is a trail of beautiful memories.” For this we are most grateful.
Ephesians 4:32 - " And be kind and compassionate (tender hearted) to one another, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.
She will be cremated as per her wishes and her ashes along with her husbands will be scattered in their favorite spot at a later date.
