Teddy Medwid, a longtime resident of Castleton Corners, died on October 17, 2022, at the age of 90. He was born on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and grew up there with his parents (Anna and Naum). He played baseball and basketball at the NY Boys Club, which he credited with his success in life. A graduate of Stuyvesant HS, Hofstra University (BA) and NYU (MBA), he was a Federal Agent for the US Department of Treasury and a substitute teacher for the NYC schools. He was a member of the United States Armed Services during the Korean Conflict and served in Korea from 1953 to 1954. While at Treasury, he also served with the Secret Service, guarding President Nixon and Robert F. Kennedy’s funeral train.
He enjoyed shopping, traveling to Ukraine, and watching the Yankees and Giants. He collected Ukrainian artwork and was particularly proud of a wedding portrait that displayed him and his beloved wife. He was a very active senior citizen who was always on the go. He was savvy, strong-willed, and thrifty with regard to everything but his children’s education which he valued above all else. He always introduced his children to others with pride in his voice. He was also very proud of his grandchildren and encouraged his grandson to say that he was going to go to Harvard. No other answer would suffice! He was a father who raised his three children by himself after his wife’s death. He never complained about the difficulties. He took the responsibility very seriously and never wavered in that respect. He loved animals, especially his cats and his daughter’s dog, Samson.
He was one of the original parishioners at Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church in Staten Island. Teddy was predeceased by his wife Olga in 1974 and his brother Bohdan in 2016. He is survived by his children: Steven, Diane, and Nancy (Jonathan), two grandchildren: Mark Medwid and Alexander McFall, and 4 nieces and nephews (Joseph, Ellen, Michael and Janet).
The wake will be on Thursday from 4-8 PM (10/20) at Casey Funeral Home and the funeral mass will be Friday at 10:00 AM at Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church in Staten Island.
