

Mrs. Emily Robbins Hook, age 86, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2011 at Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility after an extended illness. She was a native of Chatham County, grew up in Savannah and moved to Statesboro in 1950. She was a graduate of Savannah High School and attended Alabama State College for Women and Draughon’s Business College.
Mrs. Hook was a homemaker, former owner of Robbins Packing Company, the Special Lady Boutique, and The Wedding Shoppe. A tireless volunteer and loving mother to four devoted children, she was involved in many civic and community service organizations, and projects, was a former member of the Spade and Trowel Garden Club and the Half-High Bridge Club, a charter member of the Forest Heights Country Club, volunteered with the ‘Pink Ladies’ at Bulloch Memorial Hospital, and was President of the Sallie Zetterower PTA, where she chaired a successful fund-raising project to air-condition the elementary school classrooms in 1960. She was honored for her exemplary service to the American Red Cross, and notably, she chaired and personally directed the Red Cross Bloodmobile Program for over 25 years. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family and a close group of Statesboro friends for over sixty years, known as “The Crowd.” She was preceded in death by her loving husband of sixty-three years, Lewis “Bo” Hook, her parents, Freddie Wade Sheley and Charles Marion Robbins, Sr. and her brother, Charles Marion Robbins, Jr. Mrs. Lossie Lee Cone was also considered a family member, being employed in the Hook home for twenty-six years where she provided care for the children as they grew.
Survivors include four children, Lewis W. (Bill & Sue) Hook of Aiken, SC, Jane Hook (Byron) Brown of St. Simons Island, GA, Jeff Robbins (Tina) Hook of Statesboro, and Thomas Gary Hook of Statesboro; one sister-in-law, Monette Thomas of Alpharetta, GA; five grandchildren, Lauren C. Hook of Savannah, Brewer (Ashley)Holmes of St. Simons Island, GA, Emmie Holmes of Mt. Pleasant, SC., Will Hook of Statesboro, and Colby Hook of Statesboro; two step grandchildren, Chase Sewell of Tel Aviv, Israel, and Renz Sewell of Statesboro; two great grandchildren, ‘Bo’ Holmes, and John Turner Holmes, both of St. Simons Island, GA; several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her very special best friends, Myrtle Tillman of Statesboro and Martha Swann of Spartenburg, SC.
The Hook family is especially appreciative of her recent caregivers: Amie Smith, Sylvia Kline, Tamekia Bradford, Dyshan Smith, Dee Hall, Pat Sapp and Charlene Davis. Amie Smith worked and cared for Mrs. Hook for over 15 years, and was a special friend as well as an excellent caregiver.
Visitation will be held Wednesday from 12:30 until 2:00 P.M. at Hodges-Moore Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2:00 P.M. in the Chapel of Hodges-Moore with the Rev. Tim Steffen of Pittman Park Methodist Church officiating.
Burial will be in Eastside Cemetery.
Active pallbearers include her grandsons, Brewer Holmes, Will Hook, Colby Hook, Renz Sewell along with Byron Brown and Donald Long.
Honorary pallbearers will be “The Crowd”.
