Robert "Bob" L. Martin

Robert “Bob” L. Martin, Chief Master Sergeant, U. S. Air Force, Ret., age 79, passed away peacefully Friday, December 4, 2015 in Ogeechee Area Hospice.

Bob was born in Savannah and spent his childhood in Brooklet and Savannah before graduating from Savannah High School. He was a member of the Brooklet United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Hope Sunday school class and the United Methodist Men’s Group. Bob retired from the Air Force Reserves, after 36 years of service, where he served as a Loadmaster and logged more than 2000 hours of flying time in his beloved C-130. Bob also retired from NASA’s Johnson Space Center after 31 years of service, working in transportation management. He was a member of The American Legion Dexter Allen Post 90, the Brooklet Community Development Association and the Southeast Georgia Rusty Relics. From an early age Bob loved anything that had wheels, be it bicycles, motorcycles, cars or tractors. He collected antique John Deere tractors and especially enjoyed traveling to Sturgis, SD for the annual Motorcycle Rally. Bob was a devoted and loving family man and will be greatly missed by his loving family and many close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Lehmon and Myrtle Mincey Martin and his brother, Joel “Joe” D. Martin, Sr.

Bob is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sandra Long Martin of Brooklet; son, Stephen Robert Martin of Houston, TX; long-time friend, Dock Baker of Pooler and Brooklet; sisters-in-law, Linda Perkins Martin of Savannah and Rachel Long of Tuscaloosa, AL; nieces, Shirley Martin Jenkins and her husband, Curtis; Terri Belle Baker and her husband, Terry Wayne of Huntsville, AL and Tammy Ziantz and her husband, Paul of Yorktown, TX; nephew, Joel D. Martin, Jr. and his wife, Kim all of Savannah; great nieces and nephew, Ivey and Morgan Jenkins and Joel D. Martin, III and Macy Martin all of Savannah.

The family will receive friends 5:00 to 7:00 PM Monday, December 7, 2015 in Hodges-Moore Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, December 8, 2015 in Brooklet United Methodist Church with Reverend William “Chip” Grantham and Reverend E. Warren Williams officiating. Bob will lie in state from 10:00 AM until the funeral hour.

Burial, with military honors, will be in Bulloch Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Joel D. Martin, Jr., Joel D. Martin, III, Curtis Jenkins, III, Dock Baker, Lloyd Strickland and Randy Brigman.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Southeast Georgia Rusty Relics and the Hope Sunday school class.

The family would like to thank Dr. Bud Robertson, Dr. Aaron Pederson, Dr. John Duttenhaver, Sr., Dr. Paul Whitlock and the staff of Ogeechee Area Hospice for the love and care given to Bob during his illness.
