

Mr. Sam L. Brannen, age 69, died Thursday at the Ogeechee Area Hospice Inpatient Facility. He was a native of Bulloch County and a 1959 graduate of Statesboro High School. Mr. Brannen graduated from Emory University in 1963 and from the Emory University School of Law in 1966. Afterward he returned to Statesboro and began practicing law. He served as the City Attorney for Statesboro from 1966 until the present day, and early in his career was elected as Solicitor General of Bulloch County and served in that capacity for many years. Mr. Brannen was the Judge of both the Statesboro Municipal Court and the Municipal Court of the Town of Portal from 1984 until 1991. He served as a member of the Board of Governors of the State Bar of Georgia for several decades. Mr. Brannen was a past president of the Georgia Municipal Association. Early in his career, he achieved the rank of Captain in the Judge Advocate General Corps of the United States Army Reserve. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Rotary Club of Statesboro, and was a past president of the Forest Heights Country Club and of the Bulloch County Bar Association. Mr. Brannen was a devoted and loving father and was an avid outdoorsman.
Survivors include his wife, Suzanne Askew Brannen of Statesboro; one daughter, Susan Brannen Lindley of Columbus; three sons, Sam L. Brannen, Jr. of Decatur, W. Scott Brannen of Statesboro, and Kent Brannen of Statesboro; four grandchildren, William Alexander Fuller, Jackson Brannen Fuller, Walter Scott Brannen, Jr., and Amanda Marie Lindley.
A memorial service will be held Sunday at 2:30 PM at the Statesboro First United Methodist Church with Rev. Jimmy Cason officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service on the third floor of the church.
