

Thomas W. “Tommy” Sowell, age 95, passed away early Friday, April 20, 2012 at Heritage Inn of Sandersville. A native of Screven County he was a very successful farmer in Bulloch County. He was an active member of the Bulloch County Farm Bureau for thirty five years, Soil Conservation 1972 Man of the Year. After retirement from farming he worked at GSU and was involved in the Green Thumb program, Parks and Ground Management and then became the first supervisor for Paulsen Stadium with the new football program and established the basic program to produce “The prettiest little stadium in America”. Mr. Sowell was a member of the Brooklet First Baptist Church and also served as a deacon. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Inez Sowell.
Survivors include his children, June (Bill) Carroll of Loganville, Ga., Fay (Gaylan) Schmidt of Statesboro, Ga. Dianne Buffington of Coopersburg, PA, Karen (Henry) McMichael of Sandersville, Ga., Danny (June) Sowell of Twin City, Ga.; a special nephew, Timothy Faircloth and his family of Statesboro, Ga.; eleven grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Sunday from 4:30 until 6:30 PM at Hodges-Moore Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be held Monday at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of Hodges-Moore Funeral Home with Rev. Will Griffith officiating.
Active pallbearers will be great grandsons.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Bulloch County Farm Bureau Board of Directors.
Interment will be in the Brooklet City Cemetery.
