

Virgil L. Horton, Sr., age 73, passed away Thursday, August 4, 2016 in East Georgia Regional Medical Center.
Virgil was born in the Emit Grove Community and lived in Statesboro for most of his life before moving to Brooklet. Virgil began his mechanics career at Derring Chevrolet in Savannah and retired from Franklin Chevrolet after 34 years of service. He also worked as an owner/operator truck driver for more than 17 years and was a member of Emit Grove Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Buford Horton and Sallie Mae Baker Horton and his brother, Heyward Horton.
Virgil is survived by his girlfriend of 24 years, Charlotte Oglesby of Statesboro; daughter, Donna Parker and her husband, Ricky of Statesboro; sons, Virgil L. Horton, Jr. and his wife, Tracy and Steve Horton and his fiancée, Melody Williams all of Statesboro; sister, Linda Diane Horton of Birmingham, AL; Charlotte’s children, Terri Morton (Edward Wimberley) and Patricia Allen (David) all of Statesboro; eight grandchildren, Danny Hendrix, Keith Hendrix, Josh Hendrix, James Elrod, Shane Elrod, Scottie Jernigan, Dakota Horton and Tyler Horton; 13 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A gathering of family and friends will be held 9:30 AM until 11:00 AM Monday, August 8, 2016 in Hodges-Moore Funeral Home.
The funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Monday, August 8, 2016 in the chapel of Hodges-Moore Funeral Home with Pastor Samuel Watkins officiating. Burial will follow in Brooklet City Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Scottie Jernigan, Dakota Horton, Tyler Horton, Josh Hendrix, Pete Brannen and Jason Joiner.
