

He was born March 16, 1929, in Rowan County and was the son of the late Irvin Madison and Ethel May McDaniel Smith. He was owner and operator of S & H Logging Company and Baker Mill Farm. He enjoyed every aspect of his work, especially his beef cows, logging and sawmilling. He also enjoyed to travel and was a lifelong member of Third Creek Presbyterian Church.
Charlie is survived by his wife of 65 years, Gwendola “Gwen” Cook Smith, whom he married on February 16, 1947; three daughters, Kay S. Harrell (Dave) of Ringgold, GA, Jo Ann Hall (Jim) and Connie S. Christy (Ric) both of Cleveland; five grandchildren, Chad Christy (Kristin) of Apex, Michael Harrell (Heather) of Summerville, GA, Amanda Hall of Jacksonville, FL, Garrett Christy (Christina) of Cleveland, and Natalie Hall of Silver City, NM; a great-grandchild, Bluesy Harrell of Summerville, GA; and three sisters, Ruby Miller (Harold) and Betty Davidson, both of Statesville, and Lois Wilhelm of Ormond Beach, FL.
Memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Monday at Third Creek Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Don McCann officiating. A private family burial will take place in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Sunday at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home and at other times the family will be at the residence.
