

EARL CARNEYNovember 30, 1932 to December 30, 2009Mr. Earl Burton Carney, Sr., 77, of 120 Lilly Pad Loop, Troutman, N.C., died Wednesday, December 30th at Iredell Memorial Hospital in Statesville. Born in Nashville, Tenn. on November 30, 1932, he was a son of the late William Glayden Carney and Florence Elizabeth Mayfield Carney. Earl served in the U. S. Navy and retired in 2001 as owner of the Earl Carney Nationwide Insurance Agency, which he started in 1980. He was a member of First Baptist Church and was a former member of the International Order Of Odd Fellows. He joined the Greater Statesville Rotary Club in 1986 and was named a Paul Harris Fellow in 1998. Earl came to Statesville in 1958 and was with WDBM radio for 17 years. For 27 years he hosted the Gospel Songs program on WXII Television in Winston-Salem. He was a nationally recognized gospel music promoter for 31 years. He also loved his family and enjoyed fishing.On October 10, 1992, he married the former Mary Alice Schrum who survives. Also surviving are sons: Skip Carney and his wife, Karen of Rocky Mount, N.C., Donald Carney of Sherrills Ford, N.C., and Ricky Carney and his wife, Lori of Statesville, daughters: Sissy Groce and her husband, Johnny of Yadkinville and Saundra Carney of Mocksville. Also surviving are two sisters, Ollie Cameron of Statesville and Betty Carney of Galatin, Tenn., along with 20 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Also surviving is his former wife, Kay Kerr of Statesville. Additional survivors include a step son, Darin Poston of Austin, Texas and step-daughter, Tracie Murdock of Mooresville.Services celebrating Earl's life will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Sunday January 3rd at First Baptist Church Of Statesville with Dr. Jeff Porter and Rev. Mike Madding officiating. Burial will follow at Iredell Memorial Gardens, with full military rites presented by the Iredell County Veterans Council Burial Detail. Active pallbearers will be: Christopher, Nick and Justin Martin, Wesley, Foster and Joe Carney. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Glayden, Will and Alexander Carney, Dawson Poston and Ryan Murdock.
