Joyce "Joy" Godfrey Blue

Mrs. Joyce “Joy” Godfrey Blue of Lawndale, NC was born on September 20, 1935 in Charlotte, North Carolina to the late Preston Comer Godfrey and Dovie Sloan Godfrey. Joy was a selfless mother, attentive wife and the “wacky” aunt. She was creative, musical and fun-loving. Joy adored dogs, goats, and any other animal needing a home. Growing up in Charlotte, she spent her carefree summers on her aunt and uncle’s farm in Hiddenite, NC. She attended Limestone College and was of the Presbyterian faith. Joy died on Wednesday, July 13, 2022 in Gastonia, North Carolina. She was 86.

In addition to her parents, Joy was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, George Kenneth Blue, Jr.. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Ronald Godfrey and Norris Godfrey. Joy is survived by her children, M. Bonnie Blue (Cutler Ferchaud) of Vancouver, BC; Dr. G. Kenneth Blue, III of Lawrenceburg, TN; Dr. Jeffrey G. Blue (Sarah Blue) of Easton, KS; and Elizabeth J. Blue (Joseph Graf) of Arlington, VA. Joy is survived by her grandchildren, Rebecca D. Blue (Zachary Copeland); Michael Spero (Shannon); Matthew Spero (Liz); George G. Blue; and Samuel B. Graf. Katia and Isabella Spero, her great-granddaughters, also survive her. Joy is survived by five siblings: Audrey Jackson of Huntersville, NC; Melva Greene of Spartanburg, SC; Myers Godfrey of Charlotte, NC; Armine Hendrix of Durham, NC; and by her twin, Joann Belton of Gastonia, NC. She leaves behind many beloved in-laws, nieces, nephews and their spouses and children.

A visitation was held on Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home in Statesville. A celebration of Joy’s life will be held at a later date and will be announced.
