

She was born August 31, 1924, in Iredell County and was the daughter of the late James Washington and Carrie Mae Deal Lackey. During World War II, she served in the Military Intelligence Division of the War Department. After her children were older, she worked at Beauty Maid and Brenton Textiles. In 1975, she received her Associates in Arts degree from Mitchell Community College and later retired from Iredell-Statesville Schools. She was a member of Concord Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday school for 22 years. She was a recipient of the Woman of the Year award and was a lifetime member of the Presbyterian Women.
She enjoyed all aspects of the outdoors including gardening and farming. She loved all animals and enjoyed caring for the calves born on the farm. In the winter, she enjoyed quilting and was known for her famous sugar cookies and peanut brittle. She was an avid Atlanta Braves fan and even had the opportunity to travel to Atlanta to have lunch with the players.
On October 8, 1943, she married J.D. Drum who preceded her in death on April 26, 2005. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Julia Williams; and two brothers, James Harold Lackey and Cecil Lackey.
She is survived by three children, Martha Drum Hazelton and Larry Pressly Drum (Shirley), both of Statesville, and Marie Drum of Asheville; a grandson, Kevin Brian Drum (Pamela) of Statesville; and a brother, Roland Lackey of Statesville.
Funeral services celebrating Marion’s life will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, November 8, 2012, at Concord Presbyterian Church in Loray with the Rev. Kyle Goodman officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
Dillon Cartner, Chuck Eller, Bryan Lackey, Jeff Lackey, Scott Lackey, Bobby Neilson, and Steve Williams will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 PM tonight (Tuesday) at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home.
